Friends of School of the Arts Foundation (FoSOTA) is dedicated to supporting quality arts and academic learning for all students attending Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, San Francisco’s only public arts high school.
Asawa SOTA offers Bay Area students from diverse backgrounds the rare opportunity to receive tuition-free conservatory-style arts training in addition to college-preparatory academics. However, the actual costs of running top-quality arts and academic programming—including fees for artists-in-residence, art supplies, musical instruments, performance spaces, etc.—run over and above the annual funding the school receives from the San Francisco Unified School District. FoSOTA plays a key role in bridging the gap between District funding and operating expenses, as well as providing support with administration, fiscal infrastructure, and branding.
FoSOTA is responsible for accomplishing many different tasks. A few of our regular undertakings include:
Alumni Association – enhancing communications between SOTA and its alumni by providing social events and fundraising opportunities that instill goodwill and pride
Annual Fund – coordinating the Annual Fund Ask, collecting and documenting contributions, and preparing acknowledgement letters and receipts
Art Department Accounts – handling department bank deposits, processing weekly reimbursement requests, and producing regular financial reports
Artists-in-Residence (AIR) Program – administering the contracts and providing for background checks, workmen’s compensation, and liability insurance
Box Office – managing cash and credit card transactions, printing and distributing will-call tickets, running back-end management of the online tracking systems, and identifying box office policies and procedures for performances, events, and exhibitions
Grants & Foundation Giving – researching possible funding avenues, drafting appropriate proposals, maintaining files, working with staff to ensure grant requirements are met, developing reports, and maintaining relationships with past funders
Community Outreach – building strong relationships with the public by actively participating in community gatherings, promoting SOTA’s accomplishments, and engaging with community leaders in a collaborative and constructive manner to generate support
