FOSOTA Awarded SF Arts Commission Grant for Arts Education Mural

A new public artwork will celebrate arts educators who have inspired our young people in the classroom and beyond.

Sited alongside Woodside Drive in San Francisco, the project aims to transform a neglected urban corridor wall into a vibrant community mural championing arts education and honoring arts educators in San Francisco public schools.

To bring the wall to life, FOSOTA has partnered with mural artist Nico Berry, a 2023 California Arts Council Individual Established Artist Fellow who is known for engaging his communities in every step of the process—from planning to painting. Sharing his inspiration, Nico said:

I envision large-scale portraits of SFUSD arts educators who—like the late Ruth Asawa—have contributed to bringing arts education to underserved communities and to students throughout the city. The mural will also weave in flowers and native plants among the portraits, reminding us all to “give people their flowers while they’re still alive.”

We are currently seeking input from families, students, teachers, staff, and community members: Please nominate any stand-out SFUSD arts educators you would like to see depicted in the mural. The nomination form is open through Friday, May 10, 2024.
