“As music students, we are used to spending half of our school days singing together . . . but we are now stuck at home like everyone and are quite honestly bored.”

Thus was born the lockdown-inspired idea to offer free Zoom voice lessons to children ages 3–15. One Voice Mentors founder Julia (Vocal 2021) continues, “We decided to give back to the community and hopefully help the harried parents of younger children who have been cooped up like us as well.”

Conceived as an Asawa SOTA senior capstone project and funded by a $5,000 Youth Empowerment Fund grant administered by FOSOTA, the project has so far matched 12 mentors with over 50 students around the country.

Julia adds, “The point of the program is to have fun and learn something new, as well as to remember to ‘Always keep singing!’”

Clearly, the mentors, as well as the children, are doing just that!
