Capstone Spotlight: Building an E-Commerce Website from Scratch

An Asawa SOTA senior creates artworks and teaches herself how to develop a web-based application to sell them.

Each year, Asawa SOTA seniors undertake capstone projects — in-depth explorations with real-world applications that integrate the academic, artistic, cultural, and personal experiences of an integrative, arts-based education.

For Julie (Visual Arts 2021), that meant not only creating her own line of clay and resin artworks but also coding a shopping cart website to sell them — and pledging 20% of her proceeds in support of Asian American Pacific Islander causes.

From molding, baking, and painting to prototyping, coding, and debugging, Julie worked her way through dead ends, trials, and errors, emerging victorious in the end: “I learned that I really like coding, and hopefully I can implement it in what I’m going to do in the future.”

We can’t wait to see that future unfold.

FOSOTA is proud to support students with grants to help them realize their capstone projects. Read more capstone project news.
