School Yard Rap’s Griot B Takes the Stage

Asawa SOTA celebrates Black History Month with assemblies and curricula organized by the Black Student Union and School Yard Rap.

The programming — made possible with funding from FOSOTA — included an electrifying interactive performance by School Yard Rap founder Brandon “Griot B” Brown.

Taking on the mantle of a griot (gree-oh) — a storyteller who maintains oral history in West African tradition — Brown uses music and performance to teach the overlooked histories of minorities and marginalized populations.

Brown, who began his career as a public school teacher, discovered his superpowers when he introduced hip-hop to the academic setting — using the dynamic artform to increase student engagement, comprehension, and achievement.

We like the way you teach!
