USDA Awards FOSOTA $100K Farm to School Grant
McAteer Campus Community Farm will expand multidisciplinary farm-to-school programming and supply fresh produce for SFUSD school meals.
The US Department of Agriculture announced its record-breaking $14.3 million in Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grants, with the goal of helping “1.9 million children eat more tasty, nutritious foods in school, while supporting farmers and producers in their local and regional communities.” And we are excited to announce that FOSOTA was among the awardees.
In partnership with SFUSD Student Nutrition Services, Asawa SOTA, The Academy, Urban Services YMCA, Foodwise, and FoodCorps, FOSOTA will restore and expand the McAteer Campus Community Farm, creating multidisciplinary farm-to-school programming and establishing it as San Francisco’s first schoolyard farm providing produce for public school meals.
The two-year project will engage over 1,200 SFUSD high school and middle school students in agriculture education, increase the amount of fresh produce grown annually from 50 pounds to 1,000, incorporate local farm-grown food in school meals for nearly 2,500 students throughout the city, and serve as a model for sustainability and stewardship.
